Jess was in a world of her own when Emma spoke to her.

‘Have you got a partner, Jess?’ she asked.

‘No, I’m in between arseholes at the moment, thank goodness.’ She paused. ‘Sorry, that was a bit harsh.’

Emma laughed. ‘Unlucky in love?’

‘You could say that.’

‘At least you don’t have to listen to someone snoring next to you all night.’ Emma rolled her eyes. ‘My fella, Josh, sounds like the London Underground at times when I stay over. I swear there might be a murder soon.’ She coloured. ‘Oh, that was in bad taste, I’m sorry now!’

‘No worries.’ Jess smiled to show she understood it was a joke.

‘You don’t have any hobbies or things we need to be worried about, Jess?’ Connor joined in. ‘Like turning into a vampire after dark?’

‘I’ll let you know once dusk sets in,’ Jess toyed with him. ‘Just be sure not to show me your neck.’

‘Well, that rules you out then.’ Nathan twanged an elastic band at Connor, narrowly missing his nose. ‘Who’d want to bite your skin when you only wash once in a blue moon?’

‘Cheeky git. I’ll have you know it’s at least once a week.’ He sniffed his armpits. ‘Mind, in this heat, it’s more like twice a day.’

Emma got out some body spray and squirted it around the room liberally, much to the men’s dismay.

‘It smells like a flower shop,’ Nathan protested as Connor feigned a coughing fit.

Jess was watching Marsha in her office. The blinds were open so, from where she was sitting, she could see straight in. Marsha and Finn laughed at something she’d said, then their heads went down to look at a file. A bit of grimacing, and then more laughter.

A few minutes passed, and they were still talking. Before the next briefing, she needed a trip to the ladies. Sidling past Emma, she leaned in conspiratorially.

‘Can I ask you something?’

‘Sure.’

‘Marsha and Finn. They seem a bit… friendly,’ she whispered.

Emma nodded. ’They get on really well. It’s a shame Marsha is happily married, because I think they’d make a great couple. And it’s clear to everyone that Finn only has eyes for Miss Marsha.’

‘Oh?’ Jess was intrigued.

Marsha’s door opened, and she and Finn reappeared.

Jess shot out of the room, as if she were a child being caught doing something naughty. When she came back, Finn had gone and Marsha was perched on the end of the spare desk, waiting for her to return.

‘Catch-up time. I’ll start with the forensic results.’ Marsha held up the file and went through everything she’d discussed with Finn. ‘So, where do we go from here?’
